#FitnessMotivation – A body positive take on staying in shape

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Time for a pep talk. And not from some impressively shredded fitness guru — although we all applaud her discipline and passion — but from someone maybe a little more on your level. I published a guest post a while back on What kind of yoga is right for your body, and quite a few of you reached out to ask for my take on fitness. So, I've gathered you all here today for a little #fitspo pep talk to share some behind the scenes on my own fitness journey, plus give you some tips for staying motivated. Finding your Fitness inspo If you're like me, the word "fitness" makes you feel a little guilty, a little inadequate, and sometimes even a little insecure. I'm not in bad shape, but I know I have more to give. I know I could make the effort to take better care of my body and hit the gym just a little more often. Regardless of how I look, it has to do with the way I feel.  Fitness has been a weird journey for me — and a lot of other people might feel the same way. Having a weird relationship with fitness is pretty…

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Podcast: Play in new windowSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | RSS | More everyone loves brunch Every time I meet someone new and we decide to make it official via swapping IG handles, mine gets a good reaction.  After typing in @neverskipbrunch to bring up my feed, there’s the inevitable, “What an awesome name,” “Oh my goodness I love that handle,” or “How did you come up with that, it’s amazing.” I always joke that I love snacks and sleeping in, and brunch lets me do both. While I don’t disagree that I’m pretty hilarious and my handle is indeed pretty witty, there’s something deeper going on here — it’s like we all love brunch. Seriously, brunch has gone from a hot weekend trend to a cultural staple in our society. With all the meals to meet for, coffee dates to have, or drinks to grab, why are there so many good feelings around brunch? Today, we dive into my favorite meal — and maybe yours — to discover the social phenomenon behind why we brunch. Brunch is inherently ❝ cheerful, sociable & enticing❞ – Brunch: a Plea The inventor of Brunch originally crafted the idea as a…

My Hawaii Wedding // Part II: The Venue

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Hawaii Wedding at Turtle Bay Welcome back to my Hawaii wedding series. You might have already caught  Part I: The Attire where I shared all about the attire & dished about what everyone was wearing. Now in Part II: The Venue we're talking all about my gorgeous location (and in Part III: The Decor we'll cover the details) The Location This wasn't plan A, but looking at these photos with the gorgeous views you'd never know it because it turned out even more perfectly than we could have planned. Turtle Bay has all sorts of wedding packages that offer options for many different locations - from beach ceremonies, to golf course receptions, to events in the ballroom or pavilion, and even an option to host your ceremony at the stables, there are all sorts of spaces to choose from. Our initial plan was to have the ceremony on Bay View Beach Point - which you can see Rich and I standing on in the photo below - then move to the lawn for an evening reception under a clear top tent with lanterns. Thinking this venue looks familiar? It was the star of movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Mike and Dave need…

Red Wine & Blue // Wine Faves + 4th of July Outfit

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Red wine...and blue It's almost time to get all patriotic and rock some bold primaries in honor of America. The 4th is one of my favorite holidays - maybe it's the late summer nights with good food and lots of light or maybe it's fond memories of throwing our annual 4th of July bash and lighting off fireworks growing up, either way I'm excited as always. Today I'm bringing you my 4th of July look alongside some of my favorite wine accessories since drinking ice cold white wine while watching fireworks is my other favorite part of the 4th. You guys know I'm a huge wino - especially if you've watched my Instagram stories - so here are some of my wine faves then I'll tell you all about this outfit (or your can SHOP IT now if that's all you're here for). Wine-sipping outdoors is probably my favorite summer activity, so you bet I'll have an ice cold glass of white wine in hand when the fireworks begin. I love all things wine, so I have a fairly extensive collection of wine accessories but here are a few of my wine glass and accessory essentials when it comes to…

My Hawaii Wedding // Part 1: The Attire

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Spring Hawaii Wedding I'm finally sharing my Hawaii wedding! Since there are so many details to cover and so many beautiful images to share, I'm breaking this up into a three part series — Part I: The Attire // Part II: The Venue // Part III: The Decor. In part 1, we're talking all about the attire, let's dive in and see what everyone was wearing. The Bridesmaids We'll talk more about the style when we get to the venue & decor, but while we had a beautiful Oahu setting, we didn't want our wedding to feel too tropical. It was beach-inspired, but we went light on the tropical elements. Our ceremony was initially planned for the beach, but we went a little more traditional with floor-length gowns in pinky-coral tones. I wanted the girls to be able to choose a fit that they felt comfortable in, and not be stick with just one color choice. I love the look we achieved by having everyone coordinate while still letting some of their personality and style show through. The variety made for gorgeous photos and a laid back but elegant feel. The color choices were a darker pink poppy and a…

How to pick the Perfect Gift // Open me when…

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

The perfect gift Gifting is an art. And you might agree, but still find yourself scrambling to find the perfect gift, whether it's because you're totally short on ideas...or just really short on time. Gifting is something that almost no one is sunning at every time they find themselves wrapping up a present. What kind of giver are you? From thoughtful to funny, last minute to well-planned, everyone has their own kind of gifting style. Even if you love giving gifts or consider yourself great at it, sometimes you can find yourself drawing a blank as to what to give. Today I'm breaking down the art of gifting so that you will never be lost or rushing to find a last minute present. You've probably heard the saying, "The manner of giving is worth more than the gift." While it's probably a balance - the gift itself should have some purpose or intention behind it - in a sense, this saying is cliche but absolutely true. The art of gifting isn't just picking out an amazing gift, its creating an experience that conveys a feeling. How do you want your recipient to feel? This is the one and only starting…

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Nurture Your Creativity. C reativity is more than just something we exercise via a hobby - creativity makes us feel alive. As we solve problems, find new connections between ideas, and generate new ones, we feel passionate, accomplished, and purposeful. But you already know how great creativity feels, you're here to find out how to get more of it. "The desire to create is one deepest yearnings of the human soul." - Dieter Uchtdorf   Ever feel like if you just had the recipe for the perfect cocktail of creativity you'd have the answer? Creativity can be hard to nail down, but here are some essential elements we know are part of the equation: The curiosity to explore and ask questions, mixed with the humility to know that you don't know everything, added into some mindfulness to be able to think about how to think, plus a little courage to take risks without fear of failure and question the way things are, and then a bit of action because your creativity can't be turned into innovation unless you do the work.   01. Let yourself play Y our creativity needs space to breathe, to experiment, and to try things out without…

What the Ugly Duckling Can Teach Us About Modern Womanhood ?

816 1056 Kaylee // The Girl From Oklahoma

a guest post by Kaylee Jones We all know the story of the ugly duckling. He grew up an outcast, because he looked different from his peers. However, after seeing his reflection in a pond one day, he realized he had never been a duckling at all; he was a swan who’d grown up judged by a duck standard of beauty. The story has been used as a parable to teach individuals to accept their own unique beauty, and by extension - themselves, in a world filled with subjective standards for both. I was your stereotypical ugly duckling. I had knobby knees, a bad haircut, and a wardrobe full of 90’s clothes. I grew up in a time before social media and makeup tutorials helped guide young girls through their awkward pubescent years.   My beauty routine consisted of Bon Bon lip glosses that looked like edible optical illusions, hair clips shaped like butterflies, and body glitter as an everyday accessory. There was no contouring. Highlighter was a utensil I used to study, not to accentuate my cheekbones. I crimped my hair, and I was proud. Feeling nostalgic? Stop. This wasn’t the theme of a party; it was our…

What Kind of Yoga is Right for My Body?

816 1056 Nicole Morley // Nicole in Colour

A guest post by Nicole Morley Last summer I went to my first Goat Yoga class. Yes Goat Yoga, you've heard of it right? It's where you go to a farm and the yoga teacher tries in vain to teach a gentle flow to distract you from the goats and sheep that just want to be your friend. I've been to yoga classes at breweries and wineries, I've done Yoga Nidra or sleeping yoga, I've taken Yin, Power, Hot, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and so many in between. There are a lot of different kinds of yoga now-a-days and it can be overwhelming if you're just starting out. How are you supposed to know what's right for your body and your fitness level? Let's start with an assessment. Do you feel really stressed out on a daily basis? Maybe you have super tight hamstrings and shoulders? Are you the kind of person that wants to sweat it out and be challenged, or are you more of a lay-on-my-mat-and-call-it-yoga type?      Picking the right yoga class is all about deciding what you need the most, and recognizing that what you need is going to change from day to day. Which of…

The Art of Self-Surrender

1024 683 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

The Art of Surrender. When I first think of the word "surrender" I associate it with defeat. With giving up, letting go, or giving in. But if you think about it a little longer, you begin to see the immense beauty in it. Surrender is a choice to let go. And not only a choice to let go, but a decision to let go of control. It's a choice to stop fighting and just let things be. Whether that means anxiety, stress, or thoughts and feelings you're holding onto.  It's hard not to be in control. Especially if you're a driven person or have a clear vision of what you want your life to look like. Accepting that we aren't fully in control is hard. (believe me, as a driven person, I really do know the struggle)   We often ignore our lack of power, and pretend we are in control. Which when you think about it, is the cause of most of our stress. We worry things won't go our way, and spend time working hard to make sure they do. Surrender helps you let that go. Surrender is it's own form of freedom. It's making the choice to…

4 Essential Steps to Self-Love

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

What does it mean to love yourself? Self-love is often used as a buzzword. We always hear quotes like "You can't truly love someone else unless you love yourself first." It's a concept that seems pretty big picture, its hard to understand how it fits into our everyday lives so we chalk it up to making time for bubble baths or making time for outward self-care, but its so much deeper than that. It's easy to understand why, Self love is f*cking hard. And it's not totally our fault, we live in a society where a message of "you're not enough" is projected more loudly and frequently than any voice that might whisper to tell us we're enough or absolutely worthy of love. No, I'm not a socially critical hippie, its an actual phenomenon.  Need some proof that we live in the opposite of a culture of self-love? Did you know about only 4% of women would call themselves beautiful?(1) That young girls are more afraid of being fat than getting cancer or loosing both their parents?(2) Or that self-esteem based on external sources is linked to major mental health consequences? (3) Those studies are devastating. It's not that we…

The Power of Female Friendship

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Why are female friendships so hard? Supporting other women can be difficult. It's not our fault, from an early age we are trained to think being strong means going at it alone and our culture teaches us to be a little competitive towards other women. Whether it's the fact that Wonder Woman is a party of one, that every "girl squad" in any story throughout our childhood had one queen bee and a handful of obedient minions, or that internal motivation we seem to have to be the best, the prettiest, or the happiest girl in the room.  “Abandon the cultural myth that all female friendships must be bitchy, toxic, or competitive. This myth is like heels and purses — pretty but designed to slow women down.” ― Roxane Gay What's behind this? From a psychological perspective, an attractive, strong, and independent woman seems like she doesn't need the support of other women. Because of this, she is also likely not to invest in other "less strong" women. This means when a woman tries to promote herself or distinguish herself from others, she often seems like a "threat" and receives hostility from other women. She's not considered confident, strong, or willing…

Get Real with Yourself: 20Q for Self-Honesty

989 494 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

What is self-honesty? Self-honesty is getting real with yourself. Getting straight with that little voice in your head that pipes up when you're doing things you want to do that aren't good for you or when you're brushing over feelings or thoughts that deserve to have a closer look.   It's important because if you aren't in line with how you truly feel about things, why you do what you do, and what your true desires and motivations are, then you're not going to feel fulfilled and it might even hinder your success. We get it, that might sound a little woo-woo, but you can use this list of 20 questions to sit down with yourself and have some quality self-reflection. You can use these questions to have a tough internal conversation with yourself, and then you can share your answers if you want to have a serious deep talk with your hubs, partner, or a really good friend.  Write down your answers so that you can go back to them and re-answer these questions to see how you've grown or assess any improvement you've made in the different ares. Remember, self-reflection is a process that needs revisited occasionally. You could…

An Ode to Inspiration

640 1024 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

A little note on Inspiration Inspiration is a funny thing. It often hits us when we least expect it, and when we try to go searching for it we frequently seem to come up dry. Taking some time to reflect on all the people who have inspired us through our lifetime can be a pretty incredible experience. Not only are we reminded of just how many people surrounded us and guided us in all the different choices we've made, we also start to see a little clearer picture of just how different our life might have been without them. "If it's the culmination of our choices that brought us to where we are today, then it is the people who influenced and shaped those choices that we have to thank for becoming who we are now." Today's post is dedicated to all those who have inspired me, but especially those who have pushed me to pursue my creative passions.  Finding Inspiration I think we're in a really unique position to have so much inspiration at our fingertips. Whether we're just generally browsing the web, or searching specific hashtags, there is beautiful content to inspire almost every niche and interest -…

Girls Night In // A Rooftop, Wine + Blogger Besties

706 1024 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Girls Night In Every once in a while you need a relaxing girls night in with some wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, and some good laughs. My favorite thing about a girl's night in is being able to talk and dive deep with no distractions. Of course, nights out are a blast, but there is just something about a comfy couch and a great view with plenty of wine and snacks that brings you closer. It let's you dig a little deeper and share a little more honestly.      "Friendship is seriously one of the most important thing's we've got."     I have to say, you wouldn't always have found me at a girls night. As a little bit of an introvert, it took me a little bit to understand just how important friendships are. Finding people to surround yourself with and do life with is so crazy essential.   You might not know it from the photos, but I had only met one of these girls (C.J. of @everydaychiffon) in real life before this night. Both Alyssa & Delayna were my 'close' instagram friends, but we had never actually met in real life. The funny thing about that was how…
