816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

An at-home spa evening You have to take good care of yourself. Maybe you’re a pro at creating space for yourself and getting in a little “me time” or maybe your schedule is always too packed that it’s the last thing on your mind. Either way, it’s time for us to sit down and talk about why it’s so important & share some tips for unwinding. As women, many of us don’t take the time we need to recharge and unwind from our day. “Don’t wait for the weekend to give yourself space to relax and unplug.  Do a little something to take care of yourself every day, even if it’s just small.“ Creating a space for yourself at the end of every day to relax is a non-negotiable for your physical and mental health. Now, self-care isn’t all bubble baths, skincare, and facials — we covered that in the 4 Essential Steps to Self-love post — but they can play a HUGE part in helping you relax and recharge. Not only do you need to take time to invest in your amazing body that works so hard for you to make sure it’s taken care of, but when you put your body…

Summer Skincare Survival Guide

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

This post is in partnership with Alba Botanica. Summer Skincare H ello sunshine! It's almost time for days spent by the pool and weekends spent by the beach - preferably with a cocktail in hand. We're already all set with our swimsuit picks (HERE) and some adorable summer floral dress styles (HERE) - so now it's time to talk about some summer skincare.   We love summer, but with sunnier days and warmer weather bring a whole new set of skincare concerns. Here are some of the most common and some essential tips for combating them:   01. Restore Dry Skin Summer skin faces a different kind of dryness challenge than winter skin. In the winter, skin gets dried out due to chilly temps and dry air - but in the summer excessive sun and dehydration due to heat are the main culprits. You want to focus on deep moisture for your skin - which might seem counterintuitive since you might be feeling sweaty or have more oily skin than usual - but it's super important. Look for moisturizers that are light in texture but pack a punch. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aqua gels. While you might tend to want to…

Skincare Revamp: Daily + Weekly Routine

816 1056 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Let's get something clear...your skin. O k, I maybe can't clear your skin up completely, but I am going to share my daily and weekly skincare routine and why I do what I do. Hopefully, you will find some helpful tips to improve your routine, or maybe even adopt my whole thing if you are like I was a little bit ago and don't have a routine at all. P.S. If you want more skincare tips, you can see part 1 here and part 2 here Seriously, I was just winging it, occasionally finding time to wash my face and slather some creams. Then I decided that since this is not college anymore and I am full-time adulting, I needed to step up my game, do a little reading, and put together a consistent routine that worked for my skin. Well, after a while of trying different products and making some changes, here it is. MORNING ROUTINE EVENING ROUTINE WEEKLY ROUTINE MORNING T his is my morning skincare routine, including the products I use. I've been doing this whole thing for about a couple months now and I have already noticed a huge difference in my skin. 1. Cleanse Wait, I need to wash…

What the Ugly Duckling Can Teach Us About Modern Womanhood ?

816 1056 Kaylee // The Girl From Oklahoma

a guest post by Kaylee Jones We all know the story of the ugly duckling. He grew up an outcast, because he looked different from his peers. However, after seeing his reflection in a pond one day, he realized he had never been a duckling at all; he was a swan who’d grown up judged by a duck standard of beauty. The story has been used as a parable to teach individuals to accept their own unique beauty, and by extension - themselves, in a world filled with subjective standards for both. I was your stereotypical ugly duckling. I had knobby knees, a bad haircut, and a wardrobe full of 90’s clothes. I grew up in a time before social media and makeup tutorials helped guide young girls through their awkward pubescent years.   My beauty routine consisted of Bon Bon lip glosses that looked like edible optical illusions, hair clips shaped like butterflies, and body glitter as an everyday accessory. There was no contouring. Highlighter was a utensil I used to study, not to accentuate my cheekbones. I crimped my hair, and I was proud. Feeling nostalgic? Stop. This wasn’t the theme of a party; it was our…

Keep the Love Coming // Sweet Rose Sugar & Salt Scrub DIY

1024 625 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Keep the love coming after Valentine's Day with a little DIY spa. If you tuned into my 4 steps to self-love post, you know that while good self care isn't all there is to self-love, it can still play a really huge part . This Sweet Rose Sugar & Salt scrub is the perfect way to do that. Plus, it's a great way to repurpose and use up some of your roses from Vday before they shrivel up.  What You'll Need  Rose Scrub DIY Supplies Save Print 1 Cup Sugar (I used white this time, but prefer coconut sugar) 1/2 Cup Coarse Pink Himalayan Salt 1/4 Cup Almond Oil 12 Fresh Rose petals (about 1 rose) 5-10 drops rose essential oil Small Jar with lid Food Processor   TIME: 5 min STEP 01. Measure out sugar, salt, and almond oil into the food processor. I used regular white sugar and coarse pink sea salt - the kind that comes in a jar that you would put into a salt grinder. This gives the scrub a really good texture since when you run it through the food processor, the coarse grains grind up a little but are still big enough to exfoliate really well.…

A Tale of Two #TargetRuns

1024 683 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Target run meaning...just in case: Target Run: n. /ˈtärɡət rən/ A shopping trip to the department store, "Target." A: "How does every trip to target end up costing us at least $50" B: "Because I go in for batteries and milk and come out with at least ten other things."   one. She looked up from her cell phone and she heard her name called. She grabbed her vanilla latte from the bar and walked off to grab a red cart. First stop: the beauty section. She walked down each aisle, slowly circling the end and weaving into the next. Between sips of latte, she’d slow her pace - taking in certain sections of products with a more specific curiosity. She occasionally stopped to examine a product just a little bit closer. Just a glance and she put one back, then a flip of another to read the back. She was clearly looking for something specific, but she was also clearly not very much in a rush. She meandered much too casually for a woman who knew the type of product she needed or the brand she preferred. But there was something about the way she interacted with the display…

Clean Beauty Gift Guide

Maybe you need to snag some good-for-you beauty products for her, or maybe you need a gift for the clean-beauty guru on your list.  Either way, I've got you covered in this clean beauty gift guide. Green beauty often gets a bad rep for not being as "effective" as mainstream beauty products. While that probably used to be the case, green beauty has come a long way. This gift guide includes some of my favorite items that are in my own makeup bag and next to my sink, not just because they're good for me but because they're amazingly effective and I legitimately love them. Take a scroll to see if any of these picks are the perfect gift for someone on your list....or you know, if they are a great gift for yourself. JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content. 01 Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm - Farmacy First up is my favorite makeup remover. It gently melts into your skin to grab onto makeup and impurities and wash them away. It's got sunflower and ginger root oil to gently cleanse and leaves your skin feeling moisturized. Do Good Do Beautiful // Alba Botanica Face Scrub

640 1024 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

When it comes to skincare, there are loads of options. To cut through the clutter and find what works, I try to find brands I love instead of just products I love. Alba Botanica is definitely a favorite, and has been for a super long time. Not to get all sappy about skincare, but Alba Botanica has been with me since the awkward early high school years, when acne was my sole skin concern and I'd try anything to fix it. The first time I ever thought about going greener or looking for a more natural product rather than harsh scrubs and irritating serums, I bought an Alba Botanica face scrub.  It's no surprise their products are still all around my sink. While I don't struggle with acne nearly as much as I used to, I still need products that work to fight the occasional breakout. I LOVE the Acnedote Alba Botanica face scrub. It combats breakouts with salicylic acid (a plant-derived acne fighter) and willow bark extract, plus has aloe and chamomile to soothe and reduce inflammation. Some more good stuff: it's also free of parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances. It's 100% vegetarian and not tested on any furry (or non-furry)…

No Filter Needed // Facial from I Heart Skin

1024 683 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

FALL FACIAL at I HEART SKIN Part of my pre-NYFW prep was a little professional  skincare to give my complexion a fresh start for the oh-so-busy, photo shoot packed days. I stopped in to I Heart Skin Denver for a custom fall facial with Jenny.  Her treatments are completely customized to your skincare concerns, lifestyle and budget. She has a range of services to pick from with a few great add ons.  To get my skin NYFW ready, we focused on exfoliation with an enzyme peel and a microdermabrasion treatment. Jenny's treatment style is very gentle and so relaxing - you feel at home as soon as you walk into the room and she is wonderful at helping you to wind down while also giving you fresh, glowing skin. best facial denver In addition to the focus on exfoliation, we also did a harvest peach mask which was the seasonal pick for September. That's another thing I love about Jenny, she always has a fun seasonal product to try (they always smell amazing). If you're anything like me, you love learning about skincare. Not only do I want to know every trick in the book for a fresh and glowing…

It's no secret I like getting done up, and I've been know to do a multi-step skincare routine, but there are just some days (or even weeks) that all you've got time for is the bare minimum. Mini Spa: When Masks

1024 699 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

I love a good at-home spa treatment. Being able to pamper yourself in your comfy clothes (with some wine) at home is just the perfect way to end the day. One of my favorite mini spa treatments is a good sheet mask. Not only is it a quick way to get in a little self-care, it's amazingly simple and doesn't take much effort - which is just the type of thing I need after a long day. The fact that I don't have to spend the time washing it off afterwards makes it my ideal 'treat-yo-self' skin care.  ...And let's be real, though super effective, sheet masks look ridiculous - so I definitely wont be leaving the couch.   So how to pick a good sheet mask? This one can be tricky. There are OH SO MANY options that boast amazing results. I've tried everything from drug store snags to pricey options and while I've found a few favorites, the WHEN mask line is one that consistently impresses me. So what are WHEN masks? The company was started by a Korean healthcare specialist who brought together a dermatologist, a biologist, and a botanist to create skincare that was gentle and…

Hairstory + New Wash

1024 683 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Confession time. I don't wash my hair everyday....ok, many times not even every other day.  I know, I know, you're probably thinking, "Ew, why?" And honestly its a mix of things. My hair is super thick and awkwardly curly...like, not the kind of cute bouncy curls that look effortless and perfect. No, these curls are in all the wrong places and go all the wrong ways. It's a lot of effort to deal with the whole wash-dry-and-style cycle on a daily basis. Plus, it takes even more effort to get moisture to stick around here in Denver. I'm talking a leave-in conditioner, an oil, and then some texturizer. That's all before the whole styling process (bleh). So once I get all that product in there and layered perfectly to lock in moisture, I'm going to try to make it last me a couple days at the least. Once its time to wash, I felt like I needed some sudsy shampoo to really clean all the layers of product off my hair.  Could a detergent free shampoo really work for my hair? So, when Hairstory reached out and offered my a bottle of their New Wash, which is detergent free shampoo, I was…

Harrys: a good shave isn’t just for the boys

1024 659 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

Ok ladies, it's time for a little real talk. It's hard to be a girl. We have to put up with a ton of sh*t guys don't. For example, the 'pink tax.'  If you're not familiar, the pink tax is basically the idea that products which are made for / marketed to women (for example, self care products) oftentimes cost more than the same product when marketed to men. The name "pink tax' comes from the fact that the items marketed toward women and sold at a higher price are often pink. I'm not here to get political, I'm just here to offer a solution: buy the men's product. It seriously isn't very different, it works just as well (sometimes better) and it costs less.  If you're like me, that idea seemed silly at first. One reason is because I really love pink, cute things. Another reason is because the marketing really works. I constantly catch myself watching a commercial and subtly thinking that if I just had that product, I'd be more beautiful, more confident, or have a better life. I mean, just watch this women's razor commercial compared to this men's one.  The commercial for women sells you…

Does Lipsense live up to the hype?

1024 724 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

First things first, and that's a little honesty: I'd been avoiding lipsense a little. It was mostly because everyone I barely talked to in high school had been messaging me on facebook asking if they could sell me some, but it was also a little bit because it seemed like it had too much hype.  Everyone was raving about it just a little too much, to the point where it seemed too good to be true. Let me just tell you something, it's not.  I'm a lipstick girl. Classic red was my daily thing for years through college, and I'm currently loving super bright shades like hot pink and bright purple. I've tried every "longwear, all-day, apocolypse-proof" lipstick out there. And nothing stays all day. In fact, I usually have to apply at least 3-4 times.  When Kayla from Running with Colors reached out and asked if I wanted to give it a try, it was hard to say no. I tucked my skepticism away and decided to give it a whorl. At the very least, I would be able to crack the case on whether it was too good to be true. Kayla asked me what shades I'm normally…

Photofacials, Spin for Perfect Skin & my summer beauty routine

1024 683 NEVER SKIP BRUNCH by Cara Newhart

It's officially feeling like summer with all this sunshine and warm weather. Since I did a whole skincare series (No 01 | No 02 | No 03 | No 04) back in January with a post all about my skincare routine and tips for how to load up on moisture for the dry, cold weather, I've reviewed a ton of messages asking whether my routine has changed and if I do things differently for summer. It's time to talk about my current routine: what's changed, what I'm loving, and how I've updated my routine for summer. My skincare routine is constantly changing and evolving as I try new things. On a monthly basis, I have a lot of products going in and out of my circle of favorites. I love trying new things, so as I keep up with my beauty blogger besties, I'm constantly swapping in some of their most highly recommended products into my routine. Not only that, but I also get sent a wide variety of products by different brands to try out and share my experience with. Let me tell you, some of them are try-it-once-and-fall-in-love amazing, and some are well....meh.  But first, the Photofacial Before we chat about my…
